Privacy Notice

Effective: September 2026

1. Who We Are

DevNews is a news aggregator for software developers. This notice explains what we collect, why, who else sees it, and what you can do about it. It applies to everyone who visits the site.

You can read and search DevNews without an account. An account only adds personalization, likes, and bookmarks.

2. Account Data

  • Username and email address, given when you register.
  • Password, which reaches our server only to be hashed. We never store or display it in readable form.
  • A verification code sent to your email to confirm the address belongs to you.

Registration and sign-in are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that you are not a bot. Cloudflare receives your IP address and basic browser signals for that check and acts as its own controller for it.

3. Preferences and Activity

  • Programming languages, editors, frameworks, developer type, and AI coding agents you select.
  • Articles you like and bookmark.
  • Searches you run, which are sent to our server to return results.

We use this to order your feed around what you actually work with. Your recent searches are also kept on your own device and never leave it, and clearing your browser data removes them.

4. Technical Data

Our servers log the IP address, browser, and operating system of requests, along with the page requested and the time. Logs exist to keep the service running and to spot abuse, not to profile you.

5. Cookies and Local Storage

  • Sign-in cookies that keep your session open. They appear only after you log in and are removed when you log out.
  • A cookie that remembers your cookie choice, so we do not ask again.
  • Storage in your browser that remembers light or dark mode.
  • Storage in your browser that holds your recent searches on this device.

Everything above is needed to deliver the site you asked for. Analytics and advertising cookies are separate, stay off until you turn them on, and can be changed or withdrawn at any time. Refusing them never restricts anything on the site.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we read it as a refusal and act on it without asking anything further.

6. Advertising

When you allow advertising cookies, ads are served by Google AdSense. Google then processes your device identifiers and browsing activity to select and measure ads, which may include ads based on your activity on other sites. Google acts as an independent controller under its own privacy policy.

With advertising cookies off, the ad script is never loaded and no advertising identifier is set.

7. Aggregated Content

Articles on DevNews are summaries and links collected from public sources across the web. We do not own that content and it stays the property of its original authors and publishers. Opening an article on the original site puts you under that site's own privacy policy, not ours.

8. Who Else Sees Your Data

  • Hosting and content delivery providers that run the service for us.
  • Cloudflare, for bot protection on the sign-in and registration forms.
  • Google, for advertising, and only after you have consented.
  • Authorities or others where the law requires it, or where it is needed to protect our rights or someone's safety.

Providers acting for us may use the data only on our instructions. We do not sell or trade your personal data.

9. International Transfers

Our providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where that happens we rely on the transfer safeguards those providers offer, such as standard contractual clauses.

10. How Long We Keep It

Account data, preferences, likes, and bookmarks stay while your account is open and are deleted within 30 days of a deletion request. Server logs are kept for up to 12 months. Contact messages are kept for up to 24 months. Your cookie choice is stored for one year, or until you clear your browser data.

11. Your Rights

  • Ask what data we hold about you and get a copy.
  • Correct anything wrong. Username and email can be changed directly in your account.
  • Have your account and its data deleted.
  • Receive your data in a portable format.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, which does not undo what was lawful before.
  • Complain to your local data protection authority.

Using any of these rights is free and never changes the service you get.

12. Children

DevNews is not intended for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has given us personal data, tell us and we will delete it.

13. Contact and Changes

Email [email protected] with the subject line Privacy Request and say what you want to do. We confirm from the email address on your account, ask for no more than we need to identify you, and reply within 30 days.

We review this notice at least once a year and post updates here with a new effective date. Material changes are announced on the site.
