WordPress 7.2 Beta 1 Released With New Secrets API and Media Updates
The first beta of WordPress 7.2 is now available for testing, featuring a new Secrets API, improved media processing, and various dashboard performance enhancements ahead of the December 8 release.
WordPress 7.2 Beta 1 is available for testing, with the final release scheduled for December 8, 2026. You can download this early version via the WordPress Beta Tester plugin or directly from the development site. Deploy it only in staging or local environments to prevent data loss or service disruption on production sites.
This version introduces more consistent iconography in the block editor, enhanced client-side media processing to reduce server-side overhead during image handling, and admin dashboard performance refinements for faster navigation and response times.
A new Secrets API provides a native approach to managing credentials and private keys, replacing insecure storage methods. The platform also includes a notes feature for collaborative editing, though adoption remains limited. Responsive settings receive updates, but granular control and custom viewport definitions remain absent.
The project team will continue addressing bug reports and refining features as the cycle progresses toward the target December date. Developers and site administrators should test the build to verify compatibility and identify regressions.
