TanStack Redact 0.2.0 Released To Reduce Client Runtime Bundle Sizes
TanStack Redact 0.2.0 provides a lightweight alternative to the React client runtime, significantly reducing bundle sizes for applications using frameworks like Next.js and Vite.
TanStack Redact 0.2.0 is a smaller implementation of React APIs that replaces React in the browser. You add it to your build configuration to get a smaller client runtime without changing application code.
Tanner Linsley started it as an experiment for his personal site and tanstack.com. TanStack will now maintain and improve it.
Vinext and Next.js support includes both App Router and Pages Router. React handles server rendering and Server Components, while frameworks control routing, caching, and Server Action transport. Redact handles hydration and client rendering.
TanStack tested gzip sizes of emitted client JavaScript and CSS for a small app across four frameworks:
- TanStack Start: React 109.3 KB, Redact 62.3 KB (saved 47.0 KB)
- Vite: React 68.3 KB, Redact 20.1 KB (saved 48.1 KB)
- Vinext: React 138.1 KB, Redact 98.8 KB (saved 39.3 KB)
- Next.js: React 175.6 KB, Redact 139.9 KB (saved 35.7 KB)
Disabling optional features drops Start to 59.8 KB and Vite to 12.6 KB. A Vinext benchmark cut an app from 154.9 KB to 115.5 KB. Production build times stayed flat, and dev startup got slightly faster.
Redact renders synchronously without time slicing or interruptible component renders. Heavy renders can delay input. Redact 0.2.0 is available now.
