Symfony 8.2 Introduces Native Doctrine Column Encryption
Symfony 8.2 simplifies data security by moving encryption and decryption logic directly into the Doctrine ORM layer for automatic handling of sensitive database fields.
Symfony 8.2 adds native support for encrypted Doctrine columns, moving encryption and decryption from application logic into the database layer.
You can now mark fields for automatic encryption using the Doctrine mapping system. When you persist data, the framework handles the transformation. When you retrieve data, it decrypts the values before mapping them to entity objects.
This happens without manual intervention during standard CRUD operations, protecting sensitive information at rest in the database.
The implementation relies on existing Symfony security components to manage encryption keys. You define the configuration in your entity mapping to specify which fields require encryption. The framework manages the underlying cryptographic processes to prevent plain-text data exposure to the database storage layer.
This integration into the Doctrine ORM provides a standardized approach to handling sensitive information. It reduces the complexity of custom encryption implementations, lowering the potential for errors when you secure user data or private configuration values.
