Sony Transfers 419 Extended Reality Patents to Meta
Sony has reassigned a portfolio of 419 XR headset patents covering displays and hardware technology to Meta following a multi-regional agreement.
Sony transferred 419 extended reality headset patents to Meta following a confirmatory assignment agreement signed in December 2025.
The portfolio includes 180 United States patent filings, with 43 reassigned between June and September 2026. Another 239 patents are distributed across regional offices in Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe. These assets focus primarily on head-mounted display technologies.
The agreement affects Sony's internal hardware operations. It moves virtual and mixed reality intellectual property to a competitor. Company leadership previously stated an interest in augmented reality glasses, but this transfer involves active participants developing proprietary XR hardware platforms.
Meta now controls these assets. Developers must watch how the expanded patent library influences standards and tools for mixed reality environments.
