Schneider Electric to Acquire PTC for 22.6 Billion Dollars

Schneider Electric has entered an agreement to acquire industrial software provider PTC for $22.6 billion, raising questions about the future of the Vuforia augmented reality platform.

Schneider Electric agreed to acquire PTC for $205 per share in cash. The transaction values PTC at $22.6 billion, or $23.7 billion including debt. This deal brings the Vuforia augmented reality platform under the ownership of Schneider Electric.

Vuforia is used by developers to build augmented reality applications for industrial environments. The platform enables mobile devices and smart glasses to recognize physical machinery. It overlays 3D digital instructions onto hardware to help technicians with maintenance and repairs. Schneider Electric already uses Vuforia technology in its manufacturing facilities to guide staff through equipment workflows.

PTC generates most of its revenue from core engineering and design software. Vuforia represents a small portion of total earnings. Because of this disparity, uncertainty exists about whether new ownership will prioritize platform development for external developers or shift focus toward an internal tool for Schneider Electric operations. If new management views augmented reality as non-essential, the platform could face budget reductions or limited updates.

With access to Schneider Electric capital and its global distribution network, the platform might see increased investment in tracking technology and expansion into a broader client base across the international industrial sector. Integrating Vuforia directly into a large-scale industrial setting may accelerate deployment in factories.
