Replit Acquires Chroma and Announces Sunset of Chroma Cloud
Replit has acquired AI-native database startup Chroma, with plans to keep the open-source ChromaDB project active while shutting down the managed Chroma Cloud service by late 2026.
Chroma is joining Replit under a definitive agreement announced by CEO Jeff Huber on October 23. Terms and price were not disclosed by either company.
Chroma Cloud is shutting down within 60 days. On November 22, 2026, the service becomes read-only, and writes must stop or move to another deployment. By December 22, 2026, reads stop, and customers must finish exports and rotate credentials. Chroma points affected users to a support email.
ChromaDB remains open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Huber stated the project reaches 6 million downloads per month and has nearly 30,000 GitHub stars. Code from private repositories has moved to the public project. Replit will continue contributing to the project for enterprise context. ChromaDB launched in early 2023. Customers include SpaceXAI, Mintlify, Krea, Paramount, Retool, and CoreWeave.
Replit executives Amjad Masad and Michele Catasta were early Chroma investors, with Masad participating in Chroma's $18 million seed round in April 2023.
In mid-2026, Chroma started building Foundation, which reached state-of-the-art results on the BEAM memory benchmark. Both ChromaDB and Foundation will continue inside Replit.
