GraphQL Yoga v6 Released With Node 22 Support and Hive Logging

GraphQL Yoga v6 introduces per-request logging, incremental delivery support, and requires Node 22 and GraphQL 16 as the project continues its evolution toward a platform-agnostic architecture.

GraphQL Yoga v6 requires Node 22+ and GraphQL 16+. Emily Goodwin led the release, with support from Denis Badurina and Arda Tanrikulu.

Version 6 adds structured, per-request logging via Hive Logger, which generates auto-correlated request IDs matching host frameworks like Fastify. It also implements the incremental delivery spec for @defer and @stream by accepting the multipart/mixed;incrementalSpec=v0.2 header while keeping the legacy specification accessible for existing clients. Additionally, the release updates @graphql-tools package dependencies and removes legacy re-exports.

Structural changes began in 2021 when the team shifted the server foundation to Envelop, a plugin system hooking into the GraphQL execution lifecycle. This decoupled the plugin system from the HTTP layer so caching, tracing, and authentication work across various schema builders and transport layers.

In 2022, a rewrite adopted the WHATWG Fetch API. That shift enabled the server to run in Node.js, Cloudflare Workers, AWS Lambda, Deno, Bun, and Next.js. Consequently, the platform is used as a subgraph server in federated architectures and as the underlying engine for Hive Gateway and GraphQL Mesh. Migration documentation is available through official update channels.
