Google Replaces Pytype With Pyrefly For Faster Python Type Checking

Google has transitioned its Python infrastructure to the Pyrefly static analysis tool, resulting in significantly faster build times and reduced hardware resource consumption.

Google replaced its primary Python type checking infrastructure with Pyrefly, moving away from Pytype for static analysis on its Python codebase.

Pytype relied on bytecode analysis. As the codebase grew, that older tool faced difficulties with speed and diagnostic feedback clarity. Pyrefly was chosen to fix these issues by offering more actionable error messages and stricter conformance to standard typing specifications.

Migration results show incremental rebuilds are up to 98% faster. Clean builds dropped critical-path time by over 90%. Additionally, the transition cut the compute hardware needed for type-checking tasks by over 80%.
