GitHub Releases Assisted Permissions for Copilot CLI and VS Code

GitHub has launched general availability for assisted permissions, allowing LLMs to automatically approve safe command execution, file access, and URL requests within Copilot tools.

GitHub released assisted permissions generally on October 26, 2026, for the GitHub Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app, and Visual Studio Code. This functionality allows a large language model to evaluate Copilot's permission requests for command execution, file system path access, and URL opening.

Requests classified as clearly safe proceed automatically. All other requests still require manual developer approval.

To enable this, developers use specific workflows per tool. In the Copilot CLI, you run /permissions and select assisted. In the Copilot app, open the mode picker, click Tool permissions, and select Assisted. In Visual Studio Code, open the permissions picker and select Assisted permissions.

Enterprise administrators can use enterprise-managed settings to block the Allow All mode while leaving Assisted available, or disable Assisted entirely. Administrators can also set the default permission mode for new sessions. Developers retain the ability to pick any other mode permitted by policy. If the default mode is unavailable or prohibited by policy, the session starts with manual approval.

GitHub documents these evaluation methods and approval requirements in a page titled "Allowing safe commands to run without manual approval."
