GitHub Adds OpenAI GPT-6.1 Terra to Copilot for Agentic Coding

GitHub has integrated the new GPT-6.1 Terra model into its Copilot platform, offering improved performance for terminal and C# tasks across its suite of development tools.

GitHub launched OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra in GitHub Copilot on October 26 for everyday agentic coding and terminal work. The model costs less than GPT-6.1 Sol.

Early testing shows it solved more terminal and C# coding tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra. GitHub states it operates in focused, consolidated steps on well-scoped tasks, though the announcement provides no benchmark figures.

The model is available to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise tiers. You can find it in the model picker across Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile on iOS and Android, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse. Because the rollout is gradual, you might not see it immediately.

Billing runs at provider list pricing via usage-based billing, with specific rates listed in the "Models and pricing for GitHub Copilot" documentation.

For Copilot Business and Enterprise plans, administrators manage access through the model policy in Copilot settings. New models turn on automatically under default model enablement unless an administrator disabled the global default or explicitly turned off this model.
