Epic Games Removes AI Training Restrictions From Unreal Engine EULA
Epic Games has updated its EULA to allow the use of Unreal Engine and MetaHuman assets for training internal machine learning models and AI tools.
Epic Games removed two restrictions on AI training from Section 6e (General Restrictions) of the Unreal Engine End User License Agreement across all versions of the engine.
The first deleted clause barred using Unreal Engine, including its source code, as training input for any generative AI program, or as prompt-based input to a program that trains on that input. The second removed restriction covered MetaHuman, Epic's digital character toolset, prohibiting the use of MetaHuman characters, animation curves, and rendered output made to replicate MetaHuman functionality to build or enhance a database, or to train or test AI, machine learning, deep learning, or neural network technologies.
The update does not oblige anyone to use their projects for AI training, meaning studios that want to keep their work out of AI pipelines can carry on as before. Practically, teams building internal machine learning tools around their own Unreal projects can now train on their own assets, scenes, and animation data, and test AI systems against MetaHuman-based content without working around the EULA.
Epic's announcement does not address third-party assets and plugins, so studios should still check the full current EULA and any separate license terms those tools carry, as they may have their own conditions.
