DuckDB Adds Direct Querying Support for Hugging Face Datasets
DuckDB has introduced a new extension that allows developers to run SQL queries directly on remote Hugging Face datasets without needing to download files locally.
DuckDB now supports direct querying of datasets hosted on Hugging Face. You can interact with remote data without prior local downloads.
The integration uses the DuckDB extension mechanism to communicate with the Hugging Face API. When you provide a dataset path, the engine resolves the file structure and pulls necessary data segments on demand. This approach uses internal capabilities to handle partitioned and compressed data formats, including Parquet.
You can perform exploratory data analysis and execute SQL queries immediately after initialization. The implementation treats remote datasets as native tables, allowing standard join and select operations across distributed sources without moving large volumes of information into local memory.
The feature works with public and private repositories when you have the necessary authentication configured for your environment.
